This is a good article explaining the richness of Web parts in portal systems.  We will 100 percent be adding a web part option [ and I say option as we will not give up on the user control] which will enhance extension of Rainbow 2.0 portal.  If you are wondering our roadmap to this feature, please read this article as a sketch.
