Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

Over the past couple of weeks I have been experimenting with the release of rainbow which i downloaded 13/04/04. I think it's a great system in terms of its functionality and extensibility and I would really like to implement it for one of my clients. Problem is that I am really finding the performance issues discussed here to be so restrictive as to have to decide against using rainbow and use dotnetnuke instead. This is a real shame as I would much rather use Rainbow as it is in C# and seems to have better functionality than DNN.

These are the issues I am facing:
    - takes about 30 seconds to build the solution in VS.NET after making a tiny change to one file
    e.g add a Response.Write("hello")
    - after building the solution it takes about 45 seconds to reload the web site.
    - I also experience the problem of slow start page loading after periods of inactivity despite activating the webcompile functionality in the global.asax
(DNN 1 will build in about 10 seconds and reload in about the same)

Can anyone offer me any solutions to these problems ? Will the performance issues be resolved in V2? When is V2 likely to be released ?

    Developent system:
    Celeron 2ghz, 256MB Ram
    Win2k, IIS 5, SQL 2000

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

have implemented a web site pinging and monitoring service which is available from http://www.ethuongmai.com. This service is basically pings your web site at regular interval to keep it in memory and active thus prevent the slow load times for your end users when accessing you web pages first time. This service is currently available for free.

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

    A few notes.

1: the "ping" / keep alive ability is built into rainbow. Called "web compile". Not setup to be active by default but it is there.

2: Get Rainbow RC3, or wait about a week for Rainbow RC4. Rainbow RC3 is MUCH, MUCH faster than the previous build. Manu said it was around 300% faster but in my use it is even more than that.

For the most part, public websites are kept alive pretty well. Setup caching and use web compile and they run great.

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

New release has much improved first page load time. in most cases under 10 seconds.
Caching and other improvments, also keep the page flow better, and site live longer overall, meaning first page hit is less worry.
Also, the modules where all speretad out of core, so complile time on app core as well as modules is fast.
You can also update modules seperatly, each having their own solution.

Try downloading and upgrading to new release available on sourceforge.

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

I have the same problem as Julian. I don't necessarily have a problem with waiting a while for the recompile/load after a code change but the slow loading after a period of inactivity is killing me. Does anyone have any solutions or suggestions?
    Thanks!

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

    again
julian was using the rc4 core.
you should try the new 1.5 core which you can get on sourceforge.
this has much improved load times.

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned in my original note that I am using V1.5. It is still very slow on the initial load - not just after a change but after periods of inactivity. I see in this and other threads mention of ping/ keep alive and web compile. Can you please tell me where these or other configurations are enabled. (I didn't see these in web.config)
I'd really like to use rainbow portal but I just can't roll out my site until I address this problem.

    Thanks in advance. Marty

ps - I'm running (local) on a P3, 1.2GH, 640MB RAM. Also running it on a temporary site with my ISP (dotnetPark).

Re: Slow to compile in VS & slow to load start page

Problems with Rainbow may defeat the usefulness of it:

A very slow first page load time. It is crazy, the fact that someone says "Under Ten Seconds" as though this were good is equally crazy. The database is high speed, what on earth can slow the system down if coded properly? The VIEWSTATE also is another crazy thing. Totally poor.
